Boys Own
Practical Strategies for Supporting Emotional Resourcefulness and Building Self-esteem in Boys and Young men.
Young men are taught to behave in particular ways in order to achieve ‘real man’ status. These can include risk-taking, prejudice, violence, discrimination and aggression. There is often pressure to display a readiness for sex and they may be unwilling to ask for help and support. This is often the external picture that we see.
Yet talk to young men and what you will find is an internal world of anxiety, self-questioning and a desire to behave in different ways from those presented publicly.
The course will:
-
Examine what is meant by self esteem and emotional resourcefulness
-
Consider the implications on self esteem in the lives of boys & young men
-
Develop workers’ confidence and skills to support emotional development and build self-esteem
-
Develop understanding of the inner and outer worlds of boys and young men
-
Identify practical strategies to support emotional resourcefulness and self-esteem and how workers can model positive behaviours and attitudes
This two-day course is for anyone who works with boys and young men in whatever capacity. It will offer insights into the lives of boys and young men and models for developing work with them. As well as theory and practical exercises, the course will draw on the experience that participants bring.
Elements of the course can be explored in shorter sessions or by presentations and speeches.
There is a resource pack which accompanies the course.
